En ce d\u00e9but d’\u00e9t\u00e9, alors que les stations vend\u00e9ennes s’appr\u00eatent \u00e0 accueillir les premiers touristes, c’est l’arm\u00e9e allemande que la population stup\u00e9faite voit arriver. N\u0153ud strat\u00e9gique, la gare de Croix-de-Vie est imm\u00e9diatement mise sous bonne garde par la Wehrmacht. Nous sommes le 22 juin 1940, c’est le d\u00e9but de quatre ann\u00e9es d’occupation.\"\"<\/a><\/h5>\n

Les r\u00e9quisitions commencent aussit\u00f4t et nombreuses sont les maisons du front de mer \u00e0 loger 15 ou 20 soldats. L’occupant sait parfois \u00eatre affable mais la population se terre dans le silence pour \u00e9viter toute \u00e9quivoque. Localement, les d\u00e9rives du r\u00e9gime de Vichy \u00e9veillent un esprit de r\u00e9bellion, les habitants sont divis\u00e9s.<\/h5>\n

Victime d’une trahison, Guy Kergoustin, le chef du r\u00e9seau local de r\u00e9sistance, est arr\u00eat\u00e9 et ses proches craignent qu’il ait laiss\u00e9 une liste compromettante. C’est dans ce climat que Jean Cristau prend le relais \u00e0 la t\u00eate des FFI du maquis C3 qui ne sont \u00e9quip\u00e9es alors que de 25 armes pour 130 combattants.<\/h5>\n

Pour la population, la vie quotidienne est marqu\u00e9e par l’attente du retour des prisonniers, les tickets de rationnement et les petits trafics. \u00c0 cela s’ajoutent bient\u00f4t les r\u00e9quisitions de main-d’\u0153uvre pour le travail obligatoire en Allemagne et la construction du Mur de l’Atlantique. Pas moins de 50 ouvrages de d\u00e9fense b\u00e9tonn\u00e9s seront construits sur la seule plage de Saint-Gilles.<\/h5>\n

Apr\u00e8s le d\u00e9part des Allemands, des prises d’otages et des ex\u00e9cutions sommaires endeuilleront le pays qui n’\u00e9chappera pas non plus \u00e0 une vague d’\u00e9puration.<\/h5>\n

Circonscrivant leurs recherches au seul territoire du Pays de Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, les auteurs de l’association Histoire, Culture et Patrimoine du Pays de Ri\u00e9 mettent en lumi\u00e8re des archives tant publiques que priv\u00e9es peu connues, voire in\u00e9dites. Les nombreux t\u00e9moignages compl\u00e9t\u00e9s par une iconographie g\u00e9n\u00e9reuse donnent vie au r\u00e9cit des \u00e9v\u00e9nements qui, m\u00eame s’ils n’ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 marqu\u00e9s par des atrocit\u00e9s notoires de l’ennemi, n’en ont pas moins \u00e9t\u00e9 douloureux.<\/h5>\n

THE SECOND WORLD WAR IN THE LAND OF SAINT-GILLES<\/strong><\/p>\n

At the start of summer, as the resorts of the Vend\u00e9e region prepared to welcome their first tourists, the stunned population saw the German army arrive. A strategic hub, the Croix-de-Vie railway station is immediately placed under guard by the Wehrmacht. It is 22 June 1940, the beginning of four years of occupation.<\/h5>\n
\u00a0<\/h5>\n
Requisitions began immediately, and many houses along the seafront were used to house 15 or 20 soldiers. The occupiers were sometimes affable, but the population remained silent to avoid any misunderstandings. Locally, the excesses of the Vichy regime sparked a spirit of rebellion, and the inhabitants were divided.<\/h5>\n
\u00a0<\/h5>\n
Victim of betrayal, Guy Kergoustin, the leader of the local resistance network, is arrested and his loved ones fear that he may have left behind a compromising list. It is in this climate that Jean Cristau takes over as head of the FFI of the C3 maquis, which at the time is equipped with only 25 weapons for 130 fighters.<\/h5>\n
\u00a0<\/h5>\n
For the population, daily life was marked by waiting for prisoners to return, ration cards and small-scale trafficking. Soon, this was compounded by the requisitioning of labour for compulsory work in Germany and the construction of the Atlantic Wall. No fewer than 50 concrete defence structures were built on the beach at Saint-Gilles alone.<\/h5>\n
\u00a0<\/h5>\n
After the Germans left, hostage-taking and summary executions plunged the country into mourning, which was also swept up in a wave of purges.<\/h5>\n
\u00a0<\/h5>\n
Limiting their research to the Pays de Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie region, the authors of the Histoire, Culture et Patrimoine du Pays de Ri\u00e9 association shed light on little-known and even unpublished public and private archives. Numerous accounts, supplemented by a wealth of illustrations, bring to life the story of events which, although not marked by notorious atrocities committed by the enemy, were nonetheless painful.<\/h5>\n
