Pourtant, le roi de France, dans les ann\u00e9es 1620, avait acquis seul, <\/span><span class=\"citation-346 citation-347 citation-348 citation-349 citation-end-349\">sa gloire militaire et montr\u00e9 au<\/span><span class=\"citation-346 citation-347 citation-348 citation-end-348\">x puissances europ\u00e9ennes l&rsquo;\u00e9tendue d<\/span><span class=\"citation-346 citation-347 citation-end-347\">e ses m\u00e9rites. Trois cam<\/span><span class=\"citation-346\">pagnes militaires entreprises, entre 1620 et 1622, pour <\/span><span class=\"citation-344 citation-345 citation-346 citation-end-346\">mater l&rsquo;opposition de Marie de M\u00e9dicis et la r\u00e9bellion d&rsquo;une communau<\/span><span class=\"citation-344 citation-345\">t\u00e9 protestante r\u00eavant \u00e0 une R\u00e9publique, permirent \u00e0 l&rsquo;audacieux <\/span><span class=\"citation-342 citation-343 citation-344 citation-345 citation-end-345\">monarque d&rsquo;affirmer son autorit\u00e9 et de se r\u00e9v\u00e9ler, \u00e0 vingt ans, en grand roi de guer<\/span><span class=\"citation-342 citation-343 citation-344 citation-end-344\">re.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"source-inline-chip-container ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0<\/h5>\n<h5 data-path-to-node=\"3\"><span class=\"citation-339 citation-340 citation-341 citation-end-341\">La marche vers l&rsquo;abs<\/span><span class=\"citation-339 citation-340\">olutisme, jug\u00e9 salutaire <\/span><span class=\"citation-337 citation-338 citation-339 citation-340 citation-end-340\">pour l&rsquo;unit\u00e9 du royaume, imposait au pouvoir d&rsquo;orienter les consc<\/span><span class=\"citation-337 citation-338 citation-339 citation-end-339\">iences que l&rsquo;\u00e9dit de Nantes avait rendues li<\/span><span class=\"citation-337 citation-338 citation-end-338\">bres. En pleine gen\u00e8se, l&rsquo;opinion publique devait se nourrir d&rsquo;une histoire officielle d\u00e9licieusement \u00e9crit<\/span><span class=\"citation-337 citation-end-337\">e par l&rsquo;entourage du roi. <\/span>\u00c0 <span class=\"citation-333 citation-334 citation-335 citation-336 citation-end-336\">peine les fum\u00e9es des combats \u00e9taient-elles dissip\u00e9es qu&rsquo;artistes et hommes de lettres succ\u00e9daient aux hommes de guerre. M\u00e9moires, libelles, m\u00e9dailles, eaux-fortes, vitraux, tapisseries, chaque victoire de Louis XII<\/span><span class=\"citation-333 citation-334 citation-335 citation-end-335\">I \u00e9tait transform\u00e9e en triomphe, et tous les th\u00e9\u00e2tres de guerre acc\u00e9daient au rang de haut-lieu d&rsquo;histoire. Three military campaigns undertaken between 1620 and 1622 to <span class=\"citation-344 citation-345 citation-346 citation-end-346\">quell the opposition of Marie de Medici and the rebellion of a Protestant community dreaming of a republic, enabled the audacious monarch to assert his authority and reveal himself, at the age of twenty, as a great warrior king.<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<h5 class=\"source-inline-chip-container ng-star-inserted\">\u00a0<\/h5>\n<h5 data-path-to-node=\"3\"><span class=\"citation-339 citation-340 citation-341 citation-end-341\">The march towards absolutism, deemed beneficial for the unity of the kingdom, required those in power to guide the consciences that the Edict of Nantes had rendered free. In its infancy, public opinion had to be fed with an official history delightfully written by the king&rsquo;s entourage. No sooner had the smoke of battle cleared than artists and men of letters succeeded the men of war. Memoirs, pamphlets, medals, etchings, stained glass windows, tapestries: every victory of Louis XII was transformed into a triumph, and all the theatres of war were elevated to the status of historical landmarks. Mythologised by both pen and brush, territories, strongholds and islands emerged, long before the Great Siege of La Rochelle, as the memorable cradles of the absolute monarchy.<\/span><\/h5>\n<h5
